Situated in the heart of the famous Test valley, the Peat Spade is ideally situated as a base for your fly fishing trip. It’s no exaggeration to say that we are right in the middle of one of the finest and best known fly fishing areas in the world.
The crystal clear English chalk streams are the birthplace of modern fly fishing, with upstream dry fly and nymph fishing both pioneered and developed here from the 1850’s onward. Due to the chalk geology of the region, these streams support a rich and globally rare array of flora and fauna which will enrich your experience on the river bank
You are likely to see kingfishers and water voles, and if you are lucky, may even catch a glimpse of an otter not to mention the dazzling backdrop of wild flower species. Due to the clarity of the chalk filtered water, you can often count the spots on the trout you are trying to catch, which makes for an exciting and authentic fly fishing experience. All four of the “premier league” chalk streams: the Test, Itchen, Avon and Kennet (and their many tributaries), are easily reached from the Peat Spade.
We have teamed up with Famous Fishing www.famousfishing.co.uk which offers a huge variety of private beats on most of the chalk streams; the majority within 15 miles of the pub. Beginner or expert, single rod or larger group, they will suggest the perfect day for you. Qualified guides and all equipment can be provided, or you can just take a beat for the day and fend for yourself. Your guide can collect you from the Peat Spade and drop you back in the evening. Take one of our hampers with you for an idyllic riverside lunch. If you have kept a fish for the table, we’ll be delighted to cook it for your dinner!
Price guide (per day): Chalk stream fishing starts at around £100 per person, with prime Test beats during the busy mayfly period costing up to £300. Guides from £230 and premium equipment (everything you need for the day) £40 per person.
